I bought this second Dix Dodd mystery after reading the first one- The Case of the Flashing Fashion Queen. Other reviewers of this and the other book have compared them to Evanovich. These books so far aren't quite up to that laugh out loud cleverness (I'm talking early Evanovich, not the last few) but are still fun reads. Hopefully this series will continue and evolve-it's has the potential to become better than the Stephanie Plum series because the characters have more grittiness and dimension than the one note joke Evanovich characters.Dix is a P.I. who has started her own firm after figuring out that she can't ever become more than a gofer in a traditional firm in the male dominated private investigator business. She's determined to succeed and relies mostly on her amazing intuition, along with her disguise ability and just plain inability to stop until it's done. I fell in love with the supporting characters, they're a hoot. We have the brilliant hunky assistant, who has a backstory of his own, and Mrs. Presley, the owner of a skuzzy, rent by the hour motel who wears blue suede shoes and has a heart of gold, as long as you don't cross her. Then we have the Mrs. Presley's sons-two behemoths who still need their mama, and Dix's mom, an outrageous woman with a story of her own (she was a magician's assistant for years before she married and claims she learned to do real magic.)
I liked the first book better. Which you should read before this one anyway. The first was a murder mystery which had more twists and turns and action than this one about stolen jewelry. Or it could just be me OD'ing, I bought this one and read it immediately after reading Flashing Fashion because I wanted more! Or maybe it's because there's just not going to be as much action in a story set in a retirement village...
In any event, N.L. Wilson has made it to my favorite author list and I look forward to the next Dix Dodd mystery.

Dix Dodd is the funniest PI I've ever read. Mrs P is an awesome senior who I'm sure would've been a real firecracker when young. I didn't read the books in order but was still able to get the storyline. I was guessing the villain about half way through the book, but it wasn't until closer to the end that I understood how. If you want an entertaining read that will leave you laughing go for this book. I'm glad I never read this on the train it could've been embarrassing.
I had enjoyed Dix Dodd’s first mystery but this one I had to plod through. I just came not to enjoy Dix and her lust for the young apprentice PI. Also, her language left a lot to be desired. I’ve known my share of 40 something women and none of them, so far, have the potty mouth of Dix. For that reason, I’d not be reading any more of her adventures. This could have been a shorter read. Only 3 stars; and for the language it could’ve been two!
This is the second book in the Dix Dodd series I can't wait for the next installment. In a lot of sequels the authors don't keep the character development going. In this book we get a peek at a bad relationship in Dix's past, a tough of gangster in Mrs P (my favorite) and just how love struck Dylan really is. The players in this story are interesting but is the core group that will keep you coming back for more glimpses of their past and future. Nothing to heavy just light entertainment kind of like "Magnumn PI" meets the "Closer" not mind expanding but pure enjoyment..
Enjoyed this one. Got some real laughs out of it. Although I figured out the mystery of who and how pretty quickly into the book, it was getting the details of it that was fun.
It was little hard to accept that Noel Almond would be so quick to depend on an out of town PI to solve his case. I would have liked a little better development there, but remembering this is a humorous, cozy series helps with that.
A quick read and the relationship with Dix and Dylan is delicious. I'm ready for more.
Dix and Dylan make a great team. Dix knows an amazing number of weird and wonderful people including Mrs P and her mother.
I can't get over how funny these authors are! I find myself laughing out loud as I read this series. Dix Dodd just cracks me up!! I think this series could be as successful and popular as the Stephanie Plum series. Each book is worth the wait. Personally I love how Dix is a 40 - ish woman and has a sense of self and life that a younger character would not be able to pull off. Her attraction and conflict over Dylan is just so believable in this day and age of labeling women "cougars". This is definitely a book/series worth reading.

Dix and her assistant Dylan, along with Mrs. P is off to Florida as Dix's mother has been charged with theft. It's another fun, relaxing and hilarious read. I simply love the character of Dix. She's just too funny. I'm looking forward to reading the third in this series Death by Cuddle Club A Dix Dodd Mystery
